Bottling Trust: The Battle Against Wine Counterfeiting

Red, white, or rosé—wine is more than just a beverage; it’s a vital part of European culture and culinary artistry. Yet, lurking in the shadows of this cherished industry is a rising threat: counterfeit wines. To tackle this issue, researchers have developed innovative smart tags designed to guarantee authenticity and traceability, ensuring that every bottle delivered reaches its consumer honestly and genuinely.
The Seriousness of Counterfeiting
Counterfeiting is a major issue facing the wine industry, costing European businesses a staggering €1.3 billion every year, according to the European Union Intellectual Property Office. The problem is so severe that in 2018, French authorities seized an astonishing 66 million bottles of fake Côtes du Rhône wine. Such figures reveal not just the scale of counterfeiting, but the implications it has for genuine producers and consumers alike.
Interestingly, Europe’s largest vineyard isn’t found in the renowned viticulture regions of France, Italy, or Spain, but rather in Montenegro. Plantaže, a vineyard with over 2,000 hectares, champions the Montenegrin wine industry. Dr. Sanja Radonjić, an enologist at Plantaže, recounts the stark reality: “We have seen counterfeit versions of our wine in Albania, Kosovo, Russia, and Serbia.” In response, Radonjić has partnered with researchers and wine producers in a project named TRACEWINDU, aimed at employing research innovation to safeguard the integrity of wine.
Chemical Signatures: The Heart of TRACEWINDU
Under the direction of Professor Manuel Valiente from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, TRACEWINDU integrates chemistry with cutting-edge technology to ensure full traceability from vineyard to consumer table, leveraging a multi-year initiative set to conclude in early 2026. Valiente’s interest in food research stems from his upbringing in Cumbres Mayores, a town known for its cured ham, which instilled in him a deep respect for cultural heritage and the wines of Spain.
The team has developed a “digital passport” for each bottle using blockchain technology to authenticate the wine’s unique chemical signatures. These signatures consider factors like soil composition, air quality, and environmental influences, effectively serving as each wine’s distinct identity.
Blockchain Technology: A Digital Fortress
Dr. Gustavo Perez Gonzalez, a project manager and chemistry expert at UAB, believes that the marriage of chemistry with blockchain technology creates an unforgeable method for wine verification. “Blockchain technology is a trusted and immutable system to protect information,” Gonzalez explains. This cutting-edge method allows every facet of wine production—from grape cultivation to fermentation, bottling, and distribution—to be recorded permanently. By scanning a QR code on a bottle’s label, consumers access a wealth of information about their wine’s journey, akin to a human fingerprint that is uniquely identifiable and difficult to replicate.
Restoring Consumer Confidence
The TRACEWINDU initiative aims not only to combat fraud but also to enhance consumer confidence in what they purchase. As Valiente points out, “Consumers want to know where products come from, who handles them, and the processes behind their journey to the market.” This growing demand for transparency is vital, especially in a changing market where consumers increasingly prioritize authenticity.
Despite recent declines in wine sales and the challenges posed by climate change, the European wine sector remains a robust economic entity, employing 3 million people and contributing €130 billion to the EU’s GDP in 2022. Also, the importance of wine-growing stretches beyond economics; it supports the sustainability of rural regions struggling with depopulation. In Montenegro, Plantaže provides work for around 600 individuals, peaking at 1,000 during harvest, which represents a substantial opportunity in a nation of just over 615,000 residents. For Radonjić, winemaking transcends mere economics; it embodies an integral part of Montenegrin culture.
A Vision for Smart Consumption
Looking forward, Valiente envisions expansion beyond just wine. Plans for additional smart labeling protected by the EU’s geographical indication quality scheme promise exciting innovations for various alcohol products. Such geographical indications assure consumers of a product’s origin and quality, making them invaluable for prestigious markets. Collaborating with wine cooperatives and global distributors could further amplify TRACEWINDU’s visibility and impact, significantly benefiting wine sales in premium markets where authenticity is quintessential.
The evolution of wine traceability is poised to redefine not only how we consume wine but also how we engage with the stories behind each bottle, fostering a culture of transparency and trust that reflects the rich heritage of winemaking itself.
